The thing about shops way back when is that even up to the 1950s and 60s they weren't self-service and they weren't big sheds. In fact, the whole shopping system was completely different then.

For a start, all the shops were small and all had a counter inside behind which were the staff and the goods and each kind of shop only sold its own type of product. So, the butcher sold meat, the bakery sold bread, cakes, pies and pasties, the green grocer sold fruit and vegetables and the 'shop' sold all the tinned and packet stuff except there weren't that many tins and packets. It was nearly all loose.

Every area had its own shops and mine was Park Road and the system went like this:-
they opened Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm, Wednesday was half day closing in the afternoon and no openings on Sundays.
Your Mother, or most likely you, went for the rations or the messages with a shopping bag (for life) everyday.
There weren't any fridges or freezers so you mostly bought what you needed for that day and if you forgot something and the shops were closed then you went to the 'corner shops' which were literally on most corners of the streets where you lived and each sort of specialised in what they sold and charged you more than the main shops because they stayed open until 10 pm. Where I lived there were 6 corner shops within 100 yards (90 odd metres).

This area of Toxteth, just outside of the town centre and slum areas, was the place to live and build your large villa if you were a magnate or merchant and to maintain an air of opulence and ensure open spaces were within reach, Princes Road "a wide Victorian boulevard" was completed in 1846 making Princes Park a pleasant stroll away,

This image looks like it was taken from the gates of Princes Park. Dominating the scene is the water fountain and street light and on either side there is the ancient version of the white van men with their hand-cart and the ladies promenading with their prams, one a silver-cross complete with ginormous sun-shade and the other a tansad.

In the distance it looks like the steeple of the 'Toxteth Cathedral'.

Notice everyone is wearing a hat!

Address: Ancient Chapel of Toxteth Park Road, Dingle, L.8 - 1900

The thing I like about this photo is that apart from the street lighting, nothing much has changed from the 1618 image.

Just goes to show that despite the tremendous growth of the docks and the 'industrial revolution' nothing much had visibly changed in the previous 300 years.

Address: The South Shore Spread Beresford Road, Mill Street, Dingle, L.8 - 1890

The population expansion of Liverpool demanded housing for the masses and the South Shore quickly began to fill up.

In 1843, Mill Street and the surrounding area had filled up as far as Northumberland Street.

By 1850, it reached Park Street and marched on to Wellington Road by 1866 and during 1870 - 1880 it filled Beresford Road and onto Park Hill Road and the South Shore was no more.

St. Cleopas Church is the building on the right.
